While fans shouldn't hold their breaths in the hopes that Fifty Shades of Grey or its sequels score major film awards, at least one component of the first blockbuster movie in the trilogy is being recognized: Monday's Grammy nominations included two songs from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack.
Along with Furious 7, Empire, Selma, and Pitch Perfect 2, the film adaptation of E.L. James' first successful and steamy novel scored six Grammy nominations for Ellie Goulding's Love Me Like You Do and The Weeknd's Earned It. Goulding's tune, which played constantly on the radio after the film was released last winter, nabbed a nomination for best pop solo performance and best song written for visual media, while Earned It is up for three awards: best R&B performance, best R&B song, and best song written for visual media.
The sixth nomination is a major one: the entire Fifty Shades soundtrack is up for best compilation soundtrack for visual media -- a category in which it will compete against Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me,. Pitch Perfect 2, Empire: Season 1, and Selma. It's stiff competition, for sure -- especially considering Common and John Legend's Glory for Selma already won an Oscar award, but it's an honor just to be nominated.
More for The Stir: Dakota Johnson Is Up for People's Choice Award but Jamie Dornan Got Snubbed
It's nice to see artists connected with the film, which raked in $570 million worldwide, finally get some recognition. Dakota Johnson is, of course, the break-out starlet of the franchise, but the film's soundtrack added a lot to the sexy mood and feel of the film. Both Ellie and The Weeknd are having an outstanding year, and it would be cool if one or both of them get to enjoy the official stamp of approval, courtesy of a Grammy award. Time will tell.
