It's always a good day when the Duchess of Cambridge dresses like the princess she is -- and she didn't disappoint last night. Kate Middleton wore Princess Diana's glittering tiara to the annual Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace and, of course, looked every inch the royal.

It isn't often that we get to see the 33-year-old mom of two throw caution to the wind and get all decked out in total and complete princess style. For only the fourth time since marrying Prince William, Kate wore a tiara -- but this one was even more special than all of the others. The Lover's Knot tiara, which belonged to Diana and was given to her by Queen Elizabeth back on her wedding day in 1981, has never before been worn by anyone since Diana's death in 1997.

The beautiful tiara features pearls that hang from 19 diamond arches that are capped with lovers' knots. Queen Elizabeth wore it often before deciding to focus on some of her other jewels and ultimately gifting it to Diana. You can be sure emotions were running high when Kate entered the room and greeted people, including Will, who knew and loved her late mother-in-law and perhaps even remembered the days when she wore the tiara. Here she is wearing the gorgeous headpiece, which she appears to have paired with a white lace dress.

More from The Stir: Kate Middleton May Honor Diana Again by Wearing Her Tiara

The last time Kate wore a tiara was in October, when she chose to rock the lotus flower tiara to a Buckingham Palace state dinner. Her latest look is elegant and significant because she honors both Diana and Queen Elizabeth, whose grandmother Queen Mary actually designed the Lover's Knot based on a tiara worn by her own grandmother. Kate never disappoints, but that sentiment is 100 times more true when she makes a royal fashion statement.
