There just aren't enough truly great movies out there with women in leading roles. Natalie Portman just revealed she is doing her part to change that—the 33-year-old mom will play Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg in a new biopic that is going to be all kinds of kickass.
You have to imagine it would be difficult to pinpoint one specific time in Ginsberg's amazing life to focus on in a film, but On the Basis of Sex, as the biopic will be titled, will take us back in time to the start of the 82-year-old Justice's career, in which she faced a ton of sexual discrimination and went on to fight for women's equality.
Ginsberg was only the second female justice to to be appointed to the Supreme Court (Sandra Day O'Connor was the first) and she was the first female Jewish justice. When she attended Harvard Law School she was the only woman in a class of 500—can you imagine?

Along the way, she made sacrifices. When her husband got a job in New York, she transferred to Columbia Law School and gave birth to her daughter a little more than one year before starting school. When it comes to understanding the pressure women face trying to be both a great mom and have a successful career, no one gets it more than this awesome lady.
Later, she was rejected for a law clerkship on the basis of her gender. She was also passed up for other jobs because she was a woman—even though she tied for first place in her class. But instead of throwing in the towel, she went on to earn the nickname the Notorious RBG for constantly fighting sexism, defending marriage equality, and trying to get the point across that women's rights are a human rights issue.

Portman is the perfect actress to play Ginsberg. She just so happens to be gorgeous, but it would be silly to write her off as another pretty face. She's a whip-smart graduate of Harvard, an observant Jew who has always been an outspoken pro-Israel advocate, and an incredibly talented actress who rarely goes for "safe" choices when it comes to her roles (I'm pretending Queen Amidala never happened).
Can't wait to see what she brings to the table in this film and how she honors Ginsberg. I can already smell the Oscar.
