A man who drank at least five or more beers Friday night reportedly shot and killed his common law wife in front of seven children before turning the gun on himself in Los Angeles.
Police say the man, whose name hasn't been released, began arguing with his 41-year-old wife after he became intoxicated. The husband, who shared one of their seven children with the woman, then reportedly texted a friend and told him he was planning on committing suicide. While rushing over to their house, the friend received another text: this one made it perfectly clear the man was planning on killing his wife.
With a shotgun, the husband reportedly shot his wife at least once and then tried to shoot himself. At the time, all seven children were in the couple's apartment, including their 10-year-son and the victim's pregnant 19-year-old daughter, 13 and 16-year-old sons, and 1, 3, and 4-year-old daughters.
The older teen's boyfriend was also there and police say he attempted to push the man out of the house after he shot the woman. But before he could do so, the gunman reportedly fatally shot himself in the head.
Police are saying that, although this was tragic, it's "lucky" that no one else was hurt. And they're right. Given all of the murder-suicides we've heard about lately, it's scary to say this, but it's a relief to hear of one in which the children weren't harmed.
That isn't to say these poor kids aren't going to be emotionally scarred for the rest of their lives. What a senseless, horrific tragedy. Let's hope these children are surrounded by the love of relatives who can help them get through this time.
