An innocent 5-year-old angel is dead after she was kidnapped in Kansas and became trapped between her abductor and police during a fatal shootout.
Cadence Harris of Leavenworth was reportedly abducted on Friday evening by someone she knew -- family members say his name is Marcus McGowen, though his relationship to the girl is unclear at this point. The suspect allegedly fled the state and crossed over into Missouri and police engaged in a high-speed chase through both states to capture him and save Cadence.
But when they finally caught up with them in a construction zone in Kansas, things took a turn for the worse.
Cadence's kidnapper reportedly got out of his car and shot at police officers. Police returned fire. And somewhere in the middle of the gun battle, little Cady was shot and killed.
Police say their bullets were not the ones that hit the suspect's car or killed Cadence, but an investigation is ongoing and the cops involved in the shootout have been suspended with pay until all of the details are sorted out.
Officers say they tried to revive the little girl, but were not successful. An autopsy is expected to be carried out this weekend or early this week and the results should make what happened clear. But that, of course, doesn't change the fact that a young child lost her life in such a senseless, horrifying tragedy. She didn't deserve to be treated like a powerless object who is taken from her family and transported against her will. She certainly didn't deserve the fate she encountered -- to be killed because she was "in the way." Disgusting. Her poor parents and relatives shouldn't be experiencing such heartbreak and grief.
The suspect was reportedly seriously wounded and is hospitalized in Kansas City.
