North West hasn't even celebrated her second birthday yet, but Kimye's little girl is in the news for one big-time fashion fail. The proud mom posted a photo of her adorable tot wearing one of Kanye's latest designs: a bulletproof vest.
If you haven't heard, Renaissance man Kanye West has courageously thrown himself into the most risky pit of fire imaginable: the fashion industry. His Yeezy Season One collection, in which he collaborated with Adidas, debuted at New York Fashion Week and featured a line of sneakers and street wear.
And then there's this: Kanye's baby bulletproof vest modeled by North, which is getting a lot of attention. Kim posted his photo on her Instagram with the caption, "Look at my little cutie!!! #Daddysmuse #BabyYeezyBulletProofVest":

Naturally, lots of people were offended by this outfit and called Kim out for dressing her toddler in a way they deemed inappropriate. They suggested Kim and Kanye were glorifying gun culture and forcing their child to grow up too soon.
Here's why they're wrong.
I don't think the vest is cute, but I don't think it's supposed to be cute. It makes an important and valuable statement about our society and our obsession with guns. There are cute, frilly dresses with images of Elsa on them and then there's conceptual clothing that is as much art as it is attire.
I have absolutely zero idea whether Kimye had any intention of making a statement or whether they just thought this was a cool kids' outfit. But as an outsider looking in, the image of a little girl wearing a bulletproof vest reminds me of the violence that exists in our society and our need to protect our children. Since when is it a bad idea to thoughtfully dress our kids?
Give me this over belly shirts for tweens any day.

No, it's not pretty and it's not girly—but it's a sad reflection of the culture we live in. If anyone feels scandalized by this outfit, I'd hate to be in their shoes when they read the news.
