I am nuts about 99 percent of Allison Williams' fashion choices. The Girls star knows how to work her classic good looks by selecting gowns for events that are both flattering for her figure and feature clean, modern lines. The Alexander McQueen dress she wore to the 2014 Golden Globe Awards? Stunning. Her Cinderella-like blue Ralph Lauren gown, which stole the show at last year's Emmys? Pure perfection. Allison isn't the type of celebrity who will shock you by appearing in a see-through dress, and we wouldn't want her any other way.
That's why it pains me to have to criticize anything the actress wears, but I'm sorry, it must be done. Allison showed up at an event for the Museum of the Moving Image wearing a bridal gown. And, no, the event wasn't her wedding.
The 26-year-old is currently engaged to Ricky Van Veen and actually just might be planning her wedding as we speak. But having weddings on the brain was no excuse to show up to a party wearing what looks like a wedding dress:
First of all, she looks gorgeous. That's not up for debate. Second, that corset top with its wide-straps give this dress a pretty, vintage appeal. And third, Allison's simple hair and jewelry were a wise move and make her look even more angelic. Her instincts are almost always spot-on.
With all those pleasantries out of the way, let's dissect her dress.
White is a big color this spring and the fact that Allison's dress is both floor-length AND snow-white (to be fair, the white lace overlay sits over a light gold satin slip) is NOT the reason why this particular gown doesn't work. It's the train. AND the allover lace. AND all that white. So, put 'em together: floor-length + allover lace + white + train = you're wearing a wedding gown. Sorry, I don't make the rules.
One simple alteration would have taken this pretty number from the aisle to a simpler affair: Allison should have had it cut into a cocktail-length dress and paired it with modern-looking nude heels. She then would have had the option of playing with splashier accessories or keeping her look fresh and clean. That's all it would have taken to make it more party-appropriate.
The one positive thing about her look is that it has me wondering what she'll choose to wear at her actual wedding. Will she go with something streamlined like this or opt for a princess gown? Time will tell.
