Clik here to view. The most entertaining show on earth this week wasn't The Voice or So You Think You Can Dance -- it was the Scripps National Spelling Bee! For the first time in more than 5 decades, two young boys -- Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe -- tied for the win after both proved no word in the English lexicon could stump them. They are both overjoyed and neither seems to give a fig that he has to share the trophy with one of his peers. Good for you, boys -- work together and you can one day run the world.
But hey, that's not all that happened at the Bee. As tensions ran super high, one judge delighted audience members and confused the heck out of the teen contestants by quoting the amazing lyrics to Kelis' 2003 song, Milkshake, to use a challenging word in a sentence.
If you need to refresh your memory about spelling bees, contestants have the option of asking a judge to provide a sentence containing the word he or she has been given to spell. The word 14-year-old Sriram was asked to spell was "feijoada." No worries, I looked this one up and it means a type of Brazilian stew made with beef, black beans, and pork.
I've never judged a spelling bee, but I'm thinking a good sentence using this word might be something like: On our recent trip to Brazil, we sampled a traditional dish of feijoada. It's not the most creative sentence, but it gets the point across.
But judge Dr. Jacques Bailley is way cooler than me, because here's the start of a sentence he provided: "While Tabitha discovered that her milkshake brought all the boys to the yard..." Then he probably realized there was no where he could go with this one -- at least no where that had anything to do with bean stew, so he trailed off and let the audience enjoy that one.
Of course, the look on Sriram's face -- remember he was only 3 when Kelis' catchy song came out -- is a priceless reminder that some of us are getting old:

And, just because, here is Kelis' Milkshake tune, which I never realized I missed so much:

What connection do you think the judge made between the spelling word and Kelis' song?
