Five people, including three children, were killed on Mother's Day when a van crashed into their sedan and then landed on top of it. The accident took place in Hesperia, California at a little after 7 in the morning. At the time, the sedan wasn't even moving -- it had been stopped at a stop sign when the van came out of nowhere, swerved into oncoming traffic, and smashed into it, crushing it upon impact.
A man and a boy who were inside of the vehicle were taken to the hospital and were immediately pronounced dead, according to officials. As workers tried to pry the van off of the smaller Honda sedan, they found the bodies of a woman and a girl -- and they thought that was the end of the story.
Horrifyingly, after they managed to remove the van, they then discovered yet another body belonging to a boy who had been so badly crushed they had failed to find him at first.
What a nightmare. The names and ages of the victims have yet to be released, so it's too early to know whether the children and adults were related to one another. We also aren't sure where they were off to on the holiday morning, and I don't know about you, but I think this story is going to get even sadder when we find out more about the victims and their lives and plans.
The driver of the van was alone when he careened into the sedan. He suffered only minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene of the accident. Police are still investigating the incident and we don't have more information about the man at this time. As of right now, he hasn't been charged with a crime.
All fatal accidents are frightening reminders of how careful we need to be on the road -- but in this case, the driver and passengers in the sedan were just sitting at a stop sign. We'll never understand why these tragedies occur, but our thoughts are with the family members and friends of these victims.
