It seems like it's been a fun week to be John Travolta. First, you got to attend the Oscar awards. There was no need to feel any pressure, since you weren't up for any awards, and you could just hang with the fabulous people and introduce legendary Broadway star and actress Idina Menzel to the stage. Oops, but then you kind of totally screwed up her name, called her Adele Dazeem, and helped make her the most famous person on the Internet. The fact that you inspired someone to create the now insanely popular "Travoltify Your Name" name generator isn't too shabby, either. There's only one thing left to do if you're the Pulp Fiction actor: handle your flub like a pro. And that's just what he did.
In a statement to US Weekly, Travolta said he beat himself up all day after butchering Idina's name, but that he then thought, "What would Idina say? She'd say, 'Let it go, let it go!"
He went on to praise the singer and actress for her talent and said he was happy Frozen brought home two Oscars. And as we expected, Idina is not holding a grudge over the innocent mistake. She reportedly laughed it off and gave Travolta a hug backstage at the awards show.
So, the way I see it, John admitted he felt bad about messing up her name, but used humor to get past it. Perfect! What else is the guy supposed to do? Feel bad forever? It really wasn't that big a deal. It's been reported that John said her name perfectly at rehearsals. It's not as if he didn't know who Idina was -- he simply got tongue-tied and fudged her name, which is something that could happen to anyone!
I feel bad for John and hope this silliness can go away soon -- not because it's going to cost him his career or anything ridiculous like that, but because he's clearly embarrassed by the whole thing. Let's give him a break!
What do you think about the way John Travolta handled butchering Idina Menzel's name?
