When it comes to engagement rings, diamond solitaires aren't every girl's cup of tea. While many women prefer popular, classic styles they can wear with anything and possibly even pass down to their daughter or granddaughters, some of us are too artsy for all that traditional sparkle. Some of us are indie, quirky, or feel altogether too modern to rock a timeless ring.
One look at Mary-Kate Olsen and you just know she isn't the type of woman who goes for the gold/diamond standard. We recently found out that the former Full House star and designer is officially engaged to Olivier Sarkozy, but today we got a glimpse at the colossal engagement ring she's sporting -- and it couldn't be more perfect for MK.
We know Mary-Kate has always been the hipper of the Olsen twins and, given her fashion talent and interest in art, I don't find it at all surprising that she opted for this thick gold ring with diamond center:
Wow, is that ring gigantic or what? Not sure if the 27-year-old picked it out herself or if 44-year-old Olivier -- who is the half brother of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy -- knows his fiance so well he went shopping solo. Either way, it's perfect for Mary-Kate, who doesn't dress in overly feminine styles. It's a solid, tough ring that doesn't immediately scream out: "Engagement!" It's the cocktail ring of engagement rings. And it fits her personality far more than any other ring I can imagine.
Personally, this ring doesn't do it for me. I love it as a party piece, but not as something I'm going to wear every day as a reminder of my love and commitment to my husband. For one thing, it looks so darn heavy! It can't be a comfortable ring to wear daily, can it? But, at the end of the day, I love when engagement rings reflect the wearer's personality, and this thoroughly unique piece certainly fits MK's style and offbeat charm.
What do you think of Mary-Kate Olsen's engagement ring? Would you wear something similar?
