Raise your hand if you've ever been guilty of keeping a library book or store video rental a lot longer than you were supposed to -- as in, a few years longer (you can take a guess whether my hand is raised way up high). Deep down, you know you could get in trouble for being a bit of a flake, but you never actually consider the possibility that any law enforcement official would take time from his extremely busy day to crack down on your "stolen" E.T. VHS tape.
You may want to rethink that attitude and get thyself to your childhood hometown library or rental store asap because, judging by one woman's crazy experience, you could spend actual jail time for a borrowed film you failed to return.
Kayla Michelle Finley is a 27-year-old from South Carolina who, one fateful day back in 2005, borrowed the movie Monster-in-Law -- which, if you recall, is that mediocre film where Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez star as a feuding mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. At the time, she had an account at Dalton Videos, a business that no longer exists.
Finley was reportedly visiting the county sheriff's office on a separate matter when cops discovered there was a warrant out for her arrest. Dalton's owner had requested the warrant from a judge years back when Finley failed to return her movie in time. The young woman spent the night in jail because her bond hearing couldn't be held until the next morning, and was released on a $2,000 bond.
Although an official says Finley had been sent letters asking to turn herself in, she claims she never received a correspondence about it. I'm going to assume she forgot she even owned the VHS tape. If she's like most of us who lived through the awful era of VHS -- god, those stupid tapes took a lifetime to rewind -- she probably threw it in the back of her closet along with other videos the second DVDs came out and never looked back.
So we have folks out there who abuse their own children, drive like maniacs and endanger the lives of those around them, and are, literally, getting away with murder. But we can all sleep well knowing a woman who never returned a terrible VHS tape will get the justice she deserves. Thank goodness!
