Once again, Kate Middleton said "to heck" with royal etiquette and did things her way when it came to dressing her little girl for her first Christmas portrait. Princess Charlotte wore a cute pink dress in her first holiday photo -- something that a royal simply does not do until a certain age.
Charlotte, who is 6 months old, wore a Liberty print dress, cashmere cardigan, and Amaia Kids pink tights in two adorable photographs that were released by Kensington Palace this week. The littlest royal was captured having a laugh with a stuffed animal at Anmer Hall and, by all accounts, is it nothing short of the sweetest picture you've ever seen.
But wait. There's something wrong here -- a little detail that may prove (yet again) that Kate isn't afraid of doing things a little bit different. Apparently, there's a royal "rule" that states girls shouldn't wear dresses until they are at least age 1, so Charlotte is 6 months too early to look this precious.

Despite this reported "tradition," some royal insiders say there is zero truth to the rumor that there are strict palace wardrobe rules and that everyone can just calm down because, no, Queen Elizabeth is not losing her mind over these photos. Well, that's a relief -- the last thing poor Kate needs is another reason to get every royal in a big huff over her parenting choices!
It's possible all of this talk is a result of speculation after designer Rachel Riley, who created Charlotte's christening gown, spoke to People magazine about her clothing predictions for the little princess:
Because they’re a traditional family, I'm sure that she’ll wear baby suits for the first year, and then only when she's walking will she then move into dresses. Even in terms of separates, I don’t think she'll be wearing separates until much later.
I guess Kate changed her mind -- yet another reason to believe the Duchess of Cambridge is going to keep everyone on her toes. Might she dress Charlotte in all black next (one can dream)? Stay tuned to find out!
