Lots of young female celebrities are shying away from referring to themselves using the F word—feminist. But Kristen Stewart is proving herself to be the ultimate role model because she, really and truly, doesn't give the other F word if you call her a feminist.
In an interview with Wonderland magazine, the star was one of several young celebs, including Hailey Baldwin, Ashley Benson, RJ Mitte, and others, who were all asked the same question: "What is feminism in 2015?"
Unlike Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting and Shailene Woodley—two women who do not want to be called feminists—Kristen says she embraces the feminist label and has some choice words for those who slam it. Here's what she had to say:
I feel like some girls around my age are less inclined to say, 'Of course I'm a feminist, and of course I believe in equal rights for men and women,' because there are implications that go along with the word feminist that they feel are too in-your-face or aggressive. A lot of girls nowadays are like, 'Eww, I'm not like that.' They don't get that there's no one particular way you have to be in order to stand for all of the things feminism stands for.
Amen. The 24-year-old actress pretty much said it all in a few short sentences. Calling yourself a feminist doesn't mean you're announcing to the world that you're a lesbian, don't shave your legs, refuse to wear a bra, and hate men. It also doesn't provide membership into a secret society of women who are all the same.
The one—the only—thing it tells others about you is that you think men and women should have the same economic, cultural, political, and social rights. If you believe men and women should receive equal pay for equal work, but still enjoy making your husband his favorite sandwich because it's a sweet thing to do, well, congrats—you can be a feminist AND make sandwiches!
More from The Stir: Kristen Stewart Comes Clean on Lesbian Rumors
At a time when it seems so many celebs are too self-absorbed or obsessed with their sex appeal and image to serve as good role models for younger women, I'm really glad someone like Kristen is out there in the universe. She doesn't just wear grungy clothes and refuse to smile unless it's on her terms (and I love her for that, too), she seems to be living her life in a way that shows she is staying true to herself.
What do you think about Kristen's opinion on feminism? Do you consider yourself a feminist?
