Such sad news: American Idol season 7 talent Joanne Borgella has died after battling a rare case of emdometrial cancer. She was just 32.
Borgella's family announced the news on Saturday via her Facebook page and the outpouring of support they have received -- the post was "liked" more than 10,000 times -- was heartbreaking. This surprising news comes after Borgella, who was one of the top 24 contestants of American Idol in 2008, reportedly revealed last month that she had to return to the hospital for two radiation procedures. She also broke the news to fans last year via YouTube that the cancer had spread to her chest.
On Facebook, her family posted the following message:
To God be the glory! With heavy hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Joanne. On Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 5:45AM, Joanne Borgella Ramirez was called by the Lord to heaven.
At an early age, Joanne made a choice to serve and trust the Lord; and since her diagnosis over a year ago, Joanne made a choice to also be a fighter and share her journey with the world. Her faith, courage and strength were unshaken throughout every obstacle she encountered. Although our family is suffering with this great loss, we find comfort in the closeness Joanne shared with the Lord. We know her spirit still shines and will continue to live on in heaven.
The family also encouraged Joanne's fans to educate themselves on Endometrial Cancer and ways they can support research efforts to find a cure.
Although Joanne will probably be best remembered for her beautiful voice, she also became an inspiration to millions of women after she won first place on Mo'Nique's Fat Chance plus-size modeling reality TV show competition. After scoring that win, she enjoyed a successful run as a plus-size model.
